George Bagley was born on April 25, 1889 in the Mississippi River railroad town of Bagley, Grant County in southwestern Minnesota per his World War I draft records. George was the fifth of seven children known to be born to Dorlen Bagley and the German-born Agusta (or Augusta) Newman. George grew up on a farm at nearby Wyalusing, Wisconsin until sometime between 1905 and 1910 when the family moved to Willowbank Township, La Moure County, southeast of the town of Edgeley, North Dakota, where his family continued farming. In September 1917, at the time of his World War I draft registration, George, described as tall and stout, could be found farming in Germany Township, Wadena County in central Minnesota. It was here that he would have met his future wife Minnie Buchholz, who grew up in German Township.

According to the application for his gravestone in 1942, George Bagley was inducted into the US Army on July 26, 1918 and completed his enlistment on April 21, 1919. He served as a Private in Company B of the 54th Pioneer Infantry, which fought in the Meuse-Argonne offensive, and after World War I served alongside the US 3rd Army as occupation forces on the Rhine River near Koblenz, Germany. It appears that later in 1919 George Bagley married Minnie Bagley, probably in Wadena County, Minnesota. By January 1920 George Bagley had joined his brothers and parents in farming in Willowbank Township near Edgeley, North Dakota. George and Minnie had a succession of three children born in the mid-1920's in Kandiyohi and Wadena Counties. The oldest child, Freda was mentally handicapped and was living in a State institution by the time of the 1940 census. The two younger children Harold Leroy and Evelyn Margaret Bagley appear to never have married and lived most of their lives in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota. At the time of the 1940 Federal census, George Bagley and family could be found living in Roseville Township in Kandiyohi County. However, he is shown as unemployed and having worked only 8 weeks in all of 1939. George Bagley died on September 27, 1942 and is buried next to his wife Minnie in the Roseville Cemetery west of the town of Hawick in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota.
