Lois Josephine Evans Barton died peacefully in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Thursday, January 10, 2013. She was 94. "Ms. B" as she fondly was called, was born on February 2, 1918, in Port Carbon, Pennsylvania, the third daughter of William Lewis Evans and Stella J. Diehl. She grew up in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. In 1943, Lois enlisted in the United States Navy. She inspected airplanes and also flew gliders. While in the Navy, she met the love of her life, Donn F. Barton "Mr. B". He also was serving in the United States Navy. They were married on August 21, 1947, and moved to Staunton, Virginia. After Mr. B's death in 1980, Lois returned to Allentown for a brief time, but returned to Charlottesville to be near her children and grandchildren. She also lived briefly in Austin, Texas. Lois was preceded in death by her parents, sisters and husband. She is survived by her two children, Linn William Barton of Texas and Donna Barton Canterbury and her husband, Randy, of Earlysville, Virginia; six grandchildren, Kate and Chris Canterbury, both of Charlottesville, John P. Canterbury of Naples, Florida, Suzanne Hayes and her husband, John, of Elgin, Texas, Lynda Allen and her husband, Beau, of Arlington, Texas, and Sara Barton of Austin, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Hunter and Hailey Hayes, Tanner Allen, and the most recent addition, Brooklynn Allen. Ms. B was a homemaker and, for a brief time, an exercise and swimming instructor at the Staunton YMCA. She was a wonderful cook and her specialty was pies. She and Mr. B enjoyed surf fishing on the Out Banks of North Carolina as well as fishing the rivers in Virginia. She enjoyed traveling to the casinos in Atlantic City and also had the occasion to play the slot machines in Las Vegas. She was an avid Bingo player and won frequently. In her later years, she shared her life with a black schnauzer named Brock who also preceded her in death. She will be remembered for her very lengthy and verbose stories and generosity toward others. She often was referred to as a "feisty old bird" which most likely contributed to her long and colorful life. As her grandson, Chris, so eloquently stated," she was a woman of the 20th century who experienced many of the defining moments." The family would like to thank the staff on Unit 2 of the Laurels for the care she received during her residency. In additional, they would also like to thank Claude "Terry" Phillips and Bee Shafer of Woods Edge for the help they provided while Lois resided at Woods Edge. No services are planned. People wishing to remember her can make donations to the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA, P.O. Box 7047, Charlottesville. VA 22906.
