Elizabeth Baker was born at home to Mary Ellen (Brock) and Herbert Baker. The fourth of five children, she was raised on a small farm in southern Indiana. When she was very small, her brother and sisters started calling her "Delena" after a pretty little girl at their school. The nick-name stayed with her all of her life, and when she was in her mid-20's, she paid $2 to have "Delena" added to her birth certificate as her middle name.

In 1956, she married Robert (Bob) Dale Lucas in Tunica, Mississippi. They had 2 daughters: Vicki Ann Lucas (King) and Carolyn Sue Lucas (Tobin). Bob and Delena lived the first half their married life in Columbus Indiana, and moved to Lafayette Indiana in the early 1980's, where Delena was an accountant at Giradot, Strauch and Company.

Delena was a great lady with a gentle spirit. She was incredibly intelligent, unbelievably organized and her house was always spotless.

Delena loved her friends, family, daughters and grandchildren. She also loved blue throw rugs, vanilla candles and lace angels. She loved making Bob think he was the boss. Delena loved Japanese irises, pansies and baby's breath. Oh yes. . .she LOVED the telephone! Delena loved wilted lettuce, Aunt Ethel's persimmon pudding and fillet minion. She really loved potato chips. And if you can believe it, she even loved fruitcake! She loved gold earrings, comfortable shoes and leather purses with lots of compartments. She loved anything mauve. Delena loved homemade quilts, fresh bread and a clean house. She loved sending and receiving Christmas cards. She loved doing taxes, getting her hair done, playing eucher and visiting friends.

Delena loved God and she's gone to be with Him. We miss her dearly, but know she is with us still.

"You can shed tears that she is gone,
Or you can smile because she has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back,
Or you can open your eyes and see all she's left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see her,
Or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her only that she is gone,
Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind,
Be empty and turn your back,
Or you can do what she'd want:
Smile, open your eyes, love and go on."
(David Harkins)

"I am standing on the seashore.
A ship spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the ocean. I stand watching her until she fades on the horizon,
and someone at my side says, 'She is gone.'

Gone where?

The loss of sight is in me, not in her. Just at the moment when someone says, 'She is gone' there are others who are watching her coming. Other voices take up the glad shout, 'Here she comes!'" (Henry Scott Holland)
