Meri was born in Kokomo to the late Howard and Edna McReynolds. She graduated from Ball State Teachers College, (now Ball State University), in 1946, earning AB and MA degrees. She retired in 1986 after 40 years of teaching in local area schools including Cowan High School, Franklin Junior High School, and Monroe Central Junior-Senior High School.
Meri was a 50-year member of Muncie First Presbyterian Church. She belonged to many organizations including Indiana State Retirement Assoc., Kappa Gamma International Society, Chapter Alpha Epsilon where she was president from 1994-1996, Business and Professional Women, Third Age Theater, Cornerstone Center for the Arts where she had served as president and representative as well as being active in plays and musicals, Body Recall, Ladies of the Moose where she served as chair person, Cardinal Health Systems Rehabilitation Center, and RSVP reader for the blind for WIPB. She was an avid golfer and former golf committee member. She was active in the Red Hat Society and was an usher at Emens Auditorium and the Civic Theater. Meri loved to be with people and talk, talk, talk. She always enjoyed going to car shows with her son, Brent, who has been a cornerstone in her life.
Meri is survived by her son, Brent Salyer; a niece, Kimberly McKenzie Woodall; three nephews, Robert Dale McKenzie, Joe Salyer Jr., and Gene Salyer; and other extended relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold "Buzz" Salyer in 1987; a son, Steve Salyer; a sister, Clara Mae McKenzie; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to celebrate Meri's life will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Muncie First Presbyterian Church at 1400 W. Riverside, Muncie, with Pastor Ron Naylor and Pastor Carrie Jo Miller officiating. Inurnment of Meri's cremated ashes will be in Elm Ridge Memorial Park Mausoleum following the memorial service. Friends and family may gather one hour prior to services Thursday from 1-2 p.m. at Muncie First Presbyterian Church.
