Ancil was born in Hardin County on January 6, 1892 to the parents of Robert L. Joyce and Elizabeth Davis. He was a farmer his whole life and loved the outdoor world. His first marriage was to Mary Rosannnah "Rosebud" McClure (b. 01-25-1886) sometime in 1910 or 1911. They had four children; Hansel (died as infant 1914), Beryl (Leitchfield, KY 1918 -1995), Martha Oleta ( born 1916 -McDowell, Louisville , KY) and Melva E. (Thomas, Grand Rapids, MI) In the early years, they resided in Melrose, KY. Sometime in 1930, they moved to Big Clifty, KY. Mary died on October 8, 1951 at the age of 65.

On September 24, 1954, Ancil married a second wife, Lena Pierce (widow from Hardin County). She was the daughter of George and Mattie Wright Cole. She was married to Samuel O. Pierce (1905-1950) and had a daughter (Virginia, 1923-1986) and son (Hubert) that had already left home on their own.

Ancil and Lena continued farming at the homestead but she died unexpectedly on March 5, 1958. A little less than 5 months passed and on July 16, 1958 Ancil married his third wife, the widow Cordie Hatfield Hart.(deceased husband James Alvis Hart)

Ancil was an avid fishermen and an excellent sharpshooter with a pistol that he carried everywhere. He fished the nearby ponds and lakes. He had "pet" bass in one of his ponds that would take "light bread" out of your hands on the water's edge. He made the local paper in the early 1960's with an 50 or 60 pound catfish he caught "jug fishing" out of Nichols Lake (which is across the street from their property). He was a very religious man that believed that Sunday was to be reserved as a day of religious observance, which meant no cooking, working, fishing or any other activity but prayer, reading the bible, and visiting.

Cordie died at a nursing home March 11, 1980 at age 79. Ancil stayed at their house for a while, had a hard time cooking and taking care of himself, until he was admitted to the Aid Acres Nursing Home in Leitchfield in early 1981. He died on March 3, 1983 at age 91.
