AUBURNDALE -- Mrs. Alma Jean "Ditty" Sheffield was handy working with her hands and enjoyed making quilts and sewing.The retired citrus grader died of cancer Thursday (Oct. 10, 2002) at Winter Haven Hospital. She was 65."She liked sewing and making things for herself and the grandkids," said her husband of 45 years, Harry E. Sheffield. "She said she couldn't find a dress in the stores that she liked, so she would come home and make her one."Born in Donsiville, Ga., on July 17, 1937, she came to Auburndale from Georgia 54 years ago.Mrs. Sheffield worked in the citrus industry for more than 10 years, working as a grader at various plants over the years.She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening and cooking."She cooked fried chicken for her grandkids, and they said that it was the best fried chicken in the world," Harry Sheffield said. "She liked to take care of her grandchildren and take care of her garden."He described the family as close-knit, saying it spent every holiday together.She was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Auburndale.In addition to her husband, Mrs. Sheffield is survived by her son, Michael E. Sheffield, Auburndale; daughters, Deborah K. Black, Polk City, Janet L. Sheffield, Auburndale; brother, Paul Ray Ditty, Auburndale; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 this evening at Kersey Funeral Home, 108 E. Lake Stella Drive, Auburndale. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home chapel.
