According to the San Mateo County Times Gazette Sept. 11, 1863 he died in Woodside California after a long illness.
His first name is often spelled Matthias.

Parents:
Matthias Parkhurst (1795-1877)
Eliza Andrews Parkhurst (1807-1846)

Grandfather Josiah Parkhurst (1763-1818) was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and was wounded at the Battle of Saratoga.

After briefly working in the lumber business Matthias Parkhurst purchased 127 acres of land in what is now Woodside, California and built a Store in 1851. His partner was a dentist, Robert O. Tripp (1816-1909).

Even though Matthias was only in his early 20's he knew the dry goods business well. His father, also named Matthias, owned a dry goods store on Central Street in Lowell, Massachusetts for many years. The senior Matthias was also a town Selectman, member of the school committee, and member of the Massachusetts Legislature in 1835, so the young Matthias was probably well educated.

Matthias was appointed Postmaster in 1854. There was another post office and stage stop at the Pioneer Hotel at Whiskey Hill but that came later and was run by Capt. Peter Hansen (1837-1889)

Redwood City Gazette reported Saturday Morning, August 18, 1860 that the two partners were dividing their responsibilities. The store would be conducted by M.A. Parkhurst, and Dr. Tripp would thereafter superintend the ranch.

Unfortunately the younger Matthias died young in 1863. The store he established still standing on Kings Mountain Road in Woodside, California as a museum.

Matthias Parkhurst is a cousin of my great grand-uncle, Anson Burlingame (1820-1870). Burlingame, California was named after Anson Burlingame.

We also share a common immigrant great grandparents, George Parkhurst 1585-1655 and Phebe Leete 1586-1644. George and Phebe's four daughters and two sons established lineages in New England. George Parkhurst is my ninth great grandfather.

Inscription

God's Acre was located across the street from the Historical Woodside Store in Woodside, California, near the corner of Tripp Rd and Kings Mountain Rd. It is now on private Land and there are no headstones. Addie Tripp sold the land after settling a long running estate dispute in 1912.
