John Thomas (J.T.) Gillespie Jr., 81, of 9 Mallard Street, died December 11, 1989 at St. Francis Hospital after a brief illness. His beloved wife was the late Sarah Wham Gillespie who died June 6, 1985.
Born May 28, 1908 in the Dials Community of Gray Court, SC, he was the son of the late Ida Curry and John Thomas Gillespie Sr.
He was the second-generation owner of Gillespie Marble & Granite Company from 1934 until his retirement in 1973. J.T. loved woodworking and gardening. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of the Masonic fraternity and a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his daughter, Mrs. Flynn A. (Barbara) Barbare of Greenville; his son, Gene Malcolm Gillespie and wife Jean of Greenville; his sister, Mrs. Charles L. (Frances) Ridgeway of Taylors; four grandchildren, Stephen Dale Gillespie and his wife Marian of Lyman, Laura Jean Gillespie of Charleston, Flynn Augustine Barbare Jr. and Sarah Kathryn (Katie) Barbare of Greenville; two great-grandchildren, Kyle Montgomery Gillespie and John Thomas Gillespie III. His sister, Mrs. John S. (Bonnie) McGee Sr. of Citra, FL predeceased him.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at The Mackey Mortuary with burial in Springwood Cemetery.
