He was the son of Samuel and Catharine Moore VAN HOUTEN. He was married to Elizabeth Williams on November 16 1848. Their children were Peter John, Lamb H (infant), Sarah, Samuel Henry , Nancy Jane, infant dcd 1854, William Baum, Aaron W., Elizabeth Forney. He joined Company K, 148th Regiment of the PA volunteers in February 1864 during the Civil War. He was mortally wounded at the Battle of Ream's Station and died in October 1864 in Washington, DC. His headstone is spelled VanHouter the original marker has been replaced with a newer model you can see the various markers over the years in the photo gallery.
