German Doctor, War Criminal. Known for being the responsible for Nazi eugenics program, he began his medical studies in 1924 at the University of Jena, and in 1928, at age twenty-four, he became a doctor whose first assignment was as an assistant at the hospital of Borgnannehoil where worked for two years. In this hospital, practiced his apprenticeship with the german surgeon Ernst Ferdinand Sauerbruch and before age thirty, he had already distinguished himself as a gifted surgeon and an authority on injuries to the head and spine. Brandt was just a young doctor when joined the Nazi party in 1932, in the same year became a member of the Nationalsozialistischer Deutscher Arztebund. In 1933, he became a member of the SA, and the following year SS-Untersturmfürher. From 1939, he was the Reich Commissioner for Health, later was appointed lieutenant general of the Waffen-SS. In 1944, Brandt was appointed Reichskommissar für Sanitäts und Gesundheitswesen, achieving one of the highest ranks in the Nazi state. He was the man chosen by Hitler as the initiator of the T4 Program (the killing of disabled germans), and as its supreme medical authority. He was involved in positions of great responsibility in the infamous "scientific experiments" on human beings, including one in which he asked the authorization Heinrich Himmler, to carry out the inoculation of the virus epidemic hepatitis in humans. On 23 May, 1945, he was arrested by British troops and was put on trial by Allied Forces in the nazi doctors trial's held in Nuremberg. On August 20, 1947, Karl Brandt was found guilty of war crimes, crimes against humanity and membership in an organization declared criminal by the International Military Tribunal and for this reason sentenced to death by hanging. The sentence was executed the following year in prison of Landsberg am Lech near Munich.
