Son of James and Mary (Brooks) Bias

Married Nancy S Barker on September 3, 1864

Enlisted when the Civil War began in the Union Army. He was promoted from Private to Sgt. on October 25, 1862 and was promoted to 1st Lt. on December 20, 1864. He was discharged August 1, 1865. He was stationed at Fort Lee (now Charleston, West Virginia). He was on pioneer duty in Fairview, Maryland in the summer of 1862 and was on pioneer duty near Buffalo, West Virginia in the fall of 1862. He developed heart disease from hard service and exposure while in Fairview, Maryland and suffered an injury to his right foot while on duty in Buffalo. (GSA records) He was a Methodist minister. Mary, his youngest and only surviving child (in 1978), lived within ten miles of Fairview.

When civil government was restored in 1865 he became the first elected Sheriff of Boone County, as under the system prevailing before West Virginia became a separate state, Sheriffs and other county officers were appointed by the County Court.
