DONNA BLACKBURN VAUGHAN

MT. JULIET - Donna Blackburn Vaughan, 56, was called to her heavenly home on Sept. 17, 2007, almost 13 years after her first battle with melanoma.

Funeral service was at 2 p.m. on Sept. 22 at the Bellevue Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Kennedy officiating. Interment followed at the Hopewell Cemetery in Stoneburg with arrangements under the direction of The White Family Funeral Home of Bowie.

Donna was born Dec. 19, 1950 at Brooke General Hospital, Fort Sam Houston, TX to Mary Colene Kennedy and Robert Lee Blackburn. She graduated from Bellevue High School in 1968, attended Midwestern University for two years, then moved to Nashville, where she earned a B.S. degree in criminal justice from Middle Tennessee State University at Murphresboro.

Vaughan began working for the State of Tennessee in 1971 as a mail clerk in the Department of Safety; she later worked three years as a secretary for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and one year as a secretary for Governor Lamar Alexander's legal counsel. Governor Alexander promoted her to extradition officer in 1980, where she served until 1983, when she became administrative assistant to U.S. District Judge Julie Gibbons in Memphis.

In 1984, she was appointed by Governor Alexander to a six year term as a member of the Board of Paroles, and was re-appointed in 1990 by Governor Ned Ray McWherter to serve the two remaining years for a departing board member. In 1995, she was appointed Executive Director of the Board of Probation and Parole, and served in that capacity until her retirement in 2005.

In spite of working in State offices for so many years, her happy, friendly, small town personality never changed. She continued to be lovingly devoted to her entire family, her friends, and every stray cat and dog she could find!

Survivors include her husband, Sam H. Vaughan, whom she married on Aug. 1, 1987; step-children, Ryan and Jennifer Vaughan, Paragould, AR, and Jennifer and Glen Moore, Murfresboro, TN; too much loved grandsons, Shad and George Vaughan; her mother, Mary Colene Blackburn, Bellevue; brothers, Pat, Bellevue, Jeff, Sadler, and Bill and wife Jennifer, Plano; there are four dearly loved nephews and one niece, Ray and Bob Blackburn, Bowie, Jeff Glenn Blackburn, Austin, Robby Blackburn, Plano, and Julie and husband David Gibson, The Colony; and nine great nieces and nephews, John, Randall, Ryan, Erin, Colin, Hailey and Riley Balckburn, and Austin and Jenny Gibson.

She was preceded in death by her father on Oct. 6, 1960.

Pallbearers will be Ray, Bob, Jeff Glenn, Robby Blackburn, Jimmy Gamblin, and Scott Kennedy.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Melanoma Research Foundation, 170 Township Line Road, Bldg. B, Hillsborough, N.J. 08844, or to any preferred charity.
