Joshua Barton was born in Framingham on December 24, 1697, the son of Samuel Barton and Hannah Bridges. He moved with his family to Oxford in 1716. He married a woman named Anne, whose last name is unknown. She was the mother of all his children. Joshua received half of his father's Oxford homestead, a part of the Elliot Mills and a tract of land on Prospect Hill from his father's estate in 1732. He also purchased a tract on Towne's Plain from David Towne. About that time, he moved his family to Leicester, as his last three children were born there. Joshua's first wife died on June 24, 1757, and he married Hannah Holman on December 27, 1757 at Sutton. The marriage is also recorded at Southwest Harbor, Maine. Joshua also lived at Spencer and was a landowner in all three places, being called "of Spencer" at the time of his second marriage. Joshua probably died on February 13, 1773, in Sutton.
