Dorlen Dorman Bagley was the oldest of five children known to have been born to Alfred Bagley and Mary A. Clark. According to the 1900 US Census, Dorlen was born in August 1858, probably on the family farm located in Wyalusing Township, Grant County, Wisconsin at the location of the Mississippi town later named Bagley. While Dorlen helped with the family farm in his early years, he was also involved in the building of the town of Bagley. A short story by Dean Klinkenberg writes the following in the October 18, 2009 edition of the "Wisconsin" magazine: "Alfred Bagley established a farm in the mid-1800s and made a decent living growing corn. The Chicago, Burlington, & Northern railroad purchased land in 1885 from Bagley's widow, Mary, which spurred the creation of the village. The town was platted in 1886, the same year the first train roared through. According to one story, the railroad gave a glass plate with a train embossed on the bottom to every woman who gave birth that year and attended the viewing of the inaugural train. Mary's sons, Dorlen and Dorwin (names you don't hear very often anymore) built the first house and store in 1887 and gave the town its name. By 1895, Bagley counted 173 residents, many of whom were retired farmers."

Dorlen married the German-born Agusta H. Newman on April 22, 1883 in Wyalusing Township. Together they had twelve children, seven who survived to adulthood. Dorlen continued to farm near Bagley, Wisconsin until sometime between 1905 and 1910 when he moved his entire family to Willowbank Township, southeast of Edgeley, La Moure County, North Dakota where he continued his farming. Over the next 40 years Dorlen bounced between Willowbank Township near Edgeley, North Dakota (1910, 1930, 1935 records) and farms in northeast Kandiyohi County in central Minnesota (1920 and 1940 records) where he lived with some of his many sons. For a while he worked as a dry goods salesman (1930 census). His wife died in 1928, and the Dust Bowl of the mid-1930's drove his family out of North Dakota, causing him to live out the remainder of his days in Kandiyohi County, Minnesota. Dorlen Bagley died on December 15, 1944 in Kandiyohi County, and is buried in the local Roseville Cemetery right west of Hawick, Minnesota.
