a local thoroughbred owner and breeder and loving wife, mother, and grandmother, died Friday, January 25 after a brief illness at Central Baptist Hospital. She was born March 8, 1924 to Ernest and Josephine Thompson. She was a graduate of Henry Clay High School and the University of Kentucky where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. She was very active in the community and was a member of many clubs and boards including Central Christian Church, Baby Health Services, Meals on Wheels, the Lexington Humane Society, the Lexington History Museum, the Keeneland Club, the Lexington Club, the Iroquois Hunt Club, the Fayette County Womens Club and Lexington Country Club. She was also a co-founder of the Town and Country Garden Club. Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Robert E. Courtney, Sr.; two sons, Robert E. (Brenda) Courtney, Jr. And Ernest Thompson (Kathy) Courtney and three grandchildren, Caitlin Murray Courtney, Virginia Clark Courtney and Brooks Upington Courtney, all of Lexington. Funeral services will be at 10am Tuesday at Milward-Broadway with burial in Lexington Cemetery. Serving as honorary casket bearers will be Herb Sledd, John Pennebaker, Dr. Gayle Alexander, Andy Dudley, Dr. Richard D. Floyd and R. Alex Rankin. Friends may call from 4-7pm Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Central Christian Church and Baby Health Services.
