Clifton Abell was the son of Aloysius "Losh" and Mary Josephine (Spalding) Abell. He was born in Marion County, KY. He was the grandson of Lloyd Martin and Mary Elizabeth (Luckett) Abell and John W. and Mary Zorelda (Roberts) Spalding. His roots were in Holy Name of Mary Parish, Calvary, Marion County, KY. Clifton was only one month and seven days old when his mother died.

He married Mary Alma "Alma" Ryan, 1896-1985, the daughter of Joseph Albert and Mary Agnes (Wheatley) Ryan, a Washington County, KY native, on Jan. 20, 1931 at St. Rose Church, near Springfield, KY, in the presence of the Rev. Fr. J. P. Aldridge, O.P.and Joseph Abell and Catherine Ryan. He shares a tombstone with his wife and also has a military stone which reads: JAMES CLIFTON ABELL, U. S. ARMY, WORLD WAR I, and gives his birth and death dates.

James Clifton Abell, 83, a native of Washington County, , died at Veterans Hospital in Louisville, at 4:30 a.m. Friday, May 12, 1978, after an illness of three weeks of complications. The body was brought to and rested at Hale and Polin Funeral Home. Surviving are his widow, the former Misss Mary Alma Ryan; three sons, James, Martin, and Charles Abell [1939-1990], all of Washington County; twelve grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Bernice Parrott, Springfield, and Mrs. Alice Koebke, Louisville. The funeral Mass was said at St. Rose Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 15, with burial in the nearby church cemetery. Six nephews served as casket bearers. Mr. Abell was a veteran of World War I and was for many years engaged in agricultural pursuits in this county.
