Capt. Emerson came to Calais in 1825; he built the lower bridge, framed and superintended erection of the first Congregational Church building, latterly "PIKE'S OPERA HOUSE"; built several saw mills and one grist mill that he operated for many years. His children were Edward E., deceased, and Mrs. Elizabeth, wife of R.B. Lowell.(Machias Union, May 10, 1881)

In the 1870 U.S. Census, millwright Seth Emerson, 74, born Maine, was living in Ward 2, Calais, Maine, with Mary W.,63, born Maine.
Their son Edwin and his family lived next door.

In the 1860 U.S. Census, Seth Emerson, 57, born Maine, was living in Ward 2, Calais, Maine, with Mary W., 53; and Edwin, 28, both born in Maine.

In the 1850 U.S. Census, millwright Seth Emerson, 54, born Maine, was living in Calais, Maine, with May W., 42; millwright Edwin, 20; Elisabeth A., 17; and Jenet, 20, all born Maine.

A little later, in 1824, Amaziah Nash and Captain Seth Emerson "built a saw-mill and grist mill, for Green and Shaw, at Ferry Point rapids"
