CHICAGO (UPI) - Albert E. Bennett, secretary of the Illinois Racing Board for the past five months, died Monday in Belmont Community Hospital. He was 57.
Bennett, a lawyer and 39th Ward Republican committeeman, was appointed to the racing post by Gov. Richard B. Ogilvie in May.
He served in the Illinois Senate from 1956 to 1960 and from 1966 to 1970. He was a sponsor of the bill that established the Illinois Bureau of Investigation.
Bennett returned to Chicago from Denver Sunday. He attended a dinner Sunday night of the 50th Ward Republican organization. He became ill early Monday.
An aide said Bennett's death was attributed to heart failure apparently caused by pulmonary edema.
Bennett is survived by his widow, Evangeline C., and a sister, Mrs. Shirley Linklater, of Houston, Tex.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at the Barron Hall Funeral Home.
