CHRISTOPHER - Ida Louise Hess, 84, died Sunday, April 23, 2006, in Crossroads Community Hospital in Mount Vernon.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Du Quoin, with Father Jerome officiating. Everyone is asked to meet at the church today for the funeral. It was Ida's wishes to be cremated. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Du Quoin. Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 28, in Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher.
While living in Chicago, Ida was involved in a bakery business. After moving to Du Quoin, she was employed at W.W. Woolworth and P.R. Mallory before joining Phelps Dodge in 1967 as a payroll clerk.
She was Catholic.
She loved to sew and quilt and made numerous baby quilts for her grandchildren, friends and relatives. Also an avid gardener, in her younger years, she enjoyed dancing and could polka with the best of them. She will be remembered most for her delicious cookies, which she shared with everyone.
She was born Sept. 17, 1921, in Du Quoin.
She is survived by her son, Roy "Gene" Hess of Joplin, Mo.; four grandchildren, Tresa, Michael, Haley and Cody; sister, Cleopha McNeeley of St. Louis; brother, Eugene Schneider of Gardenerville, Nev.; five nephews; and four nieces.
