After his first wife passed away, Ernest married Bertha ("Bettie") Zimmerman Hix--daughter of Wilhelm ("William") Zimmermann and Marie ("Mary") Heikel--who survived him at his death.
According to his death certificate, Ernest was a security officer at Herman Hospital in Houston. He died 6 August 1966 as the result of a heart attack, and was pronounced dead on arrival at Heights Hospital in Houston, Harris County, Texas. His death certificate states that Ernest was buried at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston on 9 August 1966.
