Nina Newby Ireland, grand lover of life, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998.
Nina traveled extensively and lived in France, Switzerland, Germany and Canada. She settled in Norfolk 27 years ago with her late husband, Louis L. Newby Jr.
Nina's wide circle of friends and family will remember her for her joie de vivre and love of the arts. She was the director of the Chrysler Library of Music and donated time to the Barter Theater, Virginia Opera Association and the Chysler Museum of Art. She gave much of herself to Candii House and Resolve, NYC.
Nina is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Newby Steimen and her son-in-law, Jonathan; her dear friend, William E. Halstead; and her stepchildren, Ann, Carolyn, Stuart, Catherine and Justin. Also her grandchildren, Alexandra, Sasha, Zachary, Kayla, Dana, Ethan and Li Ann; her sister, Christine; as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
A celebration of her life will be held at Nansemond on the Bay on Friday at noon. In lieu of flowers, kindly send donations to the Chrysler Museum of Art, c/o The Nina Newby Ireland Memorial Fund. Altmeyer Funeral Home is in charge.
