The following was offered by member Richard Clarke:
John died at Chatham Manor. William FitzHugh had long since sold the house and moved to Alexandria. The last owners, just before the war started, were the Lacy family and the Union soldiers referred to it as the "Lacy House." Union troops crossed the Rappahannock at Fredericksburg and drove a Confederate force off Marye's Heights, behind the town. Many of 1,000 casualties of the Union army in that 1863 engagement, including John B. Mount, were sent back to Chatham Manor, which again served as a hospital.
