The 1st Iowa Cavalry was the first Regiment of 3 year volunteer cavalry accepted into the Union forces. The recruits owned their own horses and equipment. This regiment was involved in a multitude of expeditions, battles, skirmishes in Missouri and Arkansas as well as campaigns against Quantrills guerrilla forces.Near the end of their service they were assigned to a brigade headed by Gen.George A. Custer.
