Stephen R. "Steve" Gregg Stephen R. "Steve" Gregg of San Marcos, Texas, great-grandson of Bishop Alexander Gregg, first Episcopal Bishop to the State of Texas and a Mayflower descendent, passed away on Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at the age of 93. He was born in Staples, Texas, on June 5, 1916, to Alexander Pendleton and Effie Manning Gregg. His wife, Virginia Hofheinz Gregg preceded him in death on March 21, 2000. He is survived by his sons, Steve Gregg, Jr. of Houston, Alex Gregg and wife, Julia of Austin; daughter, Linda Gregg Fields and husband, Jerry of Houston; brother, Dewitt Gregg; sister, Mary Lou Gregg Kelly; grandchildren, Greggory Fields Burk and husband, Patrick and Jay Fields and wife, Allison; great- granddaughter, Virginia Fields Burk; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Gregg graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College in 1938, with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He was a volunteer fireman for 25 years, from 1935 to 1960. He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Force on the Manhattan Project, Silver Plate. Mr. Gregg ran for City Commissioner, carrying all seven boxes and serving on the commission for three years. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, was President of the Hays County Hospital Board and served on the First United Methodist Church Board of Stewards and also served as a Trustee for almost twenty years. He was a founding member of the San Marcos River Foundation. He served as treasurer of the Heritage Association and was President of the Chamber of Commerce for two terms. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and for forty years, from 1941 to 1981, he was a Bulk Agent for Humble Oil and Refining Company. For twenty years, Mr. Gregg was a member of the Board of the Edwards Underground Water District. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Endowment Fund, 129 W. Hutchison, San Marcos, Texas 78666. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, June 12, 2009, at the San Marcos City Cemetery Tabernacle, with the Rev. Kim Burke and the Rev. Jenna Heart officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the home of Mr. Gregg's niece, Mrs. Ed Longcope, at 833 Belvin Street. The family would like to thank the staff at Deer Creek of Wimberley for their loving and professional care of Mr. Gregg. Arrangements under the care and guidance of Pennington Funeral Home, 323 N.
