Staff Sergeant Robert W. “Rob” Sweeney, III died in the line of duty proudly serving his country in Iraq on January 10, 2005. He was a Staff Sergeant (SSG) in the Louisiana National Guard and a member of Charlie Company 3/156th Infantry Battalion, 256th Infantry Brigade (M).

Rob, 22, was born to Robert W. Sweeney II and Patricia Crawford Sweeney in Alexandria, Louisiana, on December 12, 1982. Rob was preceded in death by his mother, maternal grandfather, Lee Crawford, and paternal grandparents, SMSGT Robert W. Sweeney and his wife Doris Sweeney, all of Pineville, Louisiana.

Rob was a member of First Baptist Church of Pineville. As a member of the FBC Student Ministry, he participated in three Mission Trips, DiscipleNow Weekends and Centrifuge. He graduated from Pineville High School in 2001 where he was Battalion Staff (S-4) in the JROTC for four years and was in charge of the PHS Rebel Cannon Crew. He was a finalist in the Ford/AAA Trouble Shooting Competition representing Peabody Auto Mechanics. Student Auto Skills Contest. Rob enjoyed writing poetry. Some of his work was published in 2005 and can be read by accessing the Poetry in Motion website www.poetry.com or The Colors of Life published in 2003.

Rob was majoring in Criminal Justice at Louisiana College when he was deployed. He was a member of the Sigma Theta Fraternity whose main purpose was brotherhood and community service. The fraternity's focus was on the fruits of the spirit “Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control”.

SSG Robert Sweeney joined the Louisiana National Guard in February of 2000. Since that time, he received the following awards and decorations: Bronze Star, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Army Good Conduct Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with “M” Device, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Louisiana War Cross, and Combat Infantryman Badge.

Those left to cherish and honor him include his father, Robert Wesley Sweeney, II of Pineville; his maternal grandmother, Dovie Crawford of Pineville; his aunts, Judy Couture, Weslyn “Jo” Lowe, Janice Hayes and Sandra Nichols; his uncles Wilmer Crawford, Allen Crawford, Hal Sweeney and David Sweeney; many cousins, other family members, a host of friends, and his comrades of the Louisiana National Guard at home and overseas.

Services for Christian burial for Rob will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 17, 2005 at First Baptist Church in Pineville, with Reverend Tony Lewis officiating, assisted by Dr. Gary Baldwin. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Members of the Louisiana National Guard will serve as Honor Guard and pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be his friends, Lucas Atkinson, Michael Gallagher, Jason Gray, Chris Joffrion, Drew Killen, John Majors, Adam Petus, Will Tubbs, and Josh Wiggins.

On Sunday, January 16, 2005, the family will receive friends at Hixson Brothers in Pineville from 3:00pm until 8:00pm and Monday, January 17, 2005 at the church from 11:00 until time of the services.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905 or to the American Cancer Society, 605C Medical Center Drive, Alexandria, LA 71301-8127.
