SOUTH WAYNE- Avis Idell (Berget) Mau, age 77, of South Wayne, Wisconsin, died Friday, August 6, 1999 at Monroe Clinic Hospital.

She was born April 4, 1922 in Wiota Township, LaFayette County, Wisconsin, the daughter of Elmer and Alice (Engebretson) Berget. She attended the Engebretson School.

Avis and Milton E. Mau were married January 21, 1942 and they farmed in Wayne Township until moving to Gratiot in 1975. Avis worked part-time at the Blackhawk Middle School in the kitchen and at Halverson Grocery before retiring and moving to South Wayne Hillside Apartments in 1996.

She was a member of Wiota Lutheran Church, Naomi Circle of Wiota Lutheran Church, and Gratiot Homemakers Club.

Surviving are three sons, Wayne (Judy) Mau of Edgerton, Allan (Pauline) Mau of South Wayne, and David Mau of Gratiot; six grandchildren, Michael Croft, Thomas Mau, Neil Mau, Mindy Monson, Tim Mau, and Shawn Wiesonberg; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Merlin Berget of South Wayne; and three sisters, Myrtle Carroll of Gratiot, Joslyn (Duane) Shippy of McConnell, Illinois, and May (Pat) Dunn of Cane Coral, Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents in 1978; husband, Milton in 1982; brother, Virgil Berget; sister, Hazel Zuberbuhler; and infant sister, Shirley Berget.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 10, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at the WIOTA LUTHERAN CHURCH at Wiota, Wisconsin with Rev. Victoria Shepherd officiating. Burial will follow in the West Wiota Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday, August 9, 1999 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the HANSON-HAGER FUNERAL HOME in South Wayne, Wisconsin.

God's finger touched her
and she slipped away,
From earth's dark shadow
to a brighter day.
God saw the road was getting rough,
the hills were hard to climb;
He gently closed her weary eyes,
and whispered "Peace Be Thine.
