THE GAZETTE JUNE 22, 1905
ALBANY (KY) JOURNAL
One of the most horrible deeds ever committed was perpetrated in this county last Monday. Mrs. Calvin Rains, an aged woman
in bad health and unable to sit up, was most foully, cowardly and shamefully murdered in her bed at her home near Maupin, KY, about six miles east of Albany. The family consist of the father, mother and two daughters at home and a married son and daughter away from home. The fathers says he was out in the garden at work and the daughters claim to have been in the barn shelling corn, and they did not know anything about it until it was over. They claim to have heard a racket at the house and started to go to see the cause, but when they got there, they found the mother dead. They say they saw two men entering the woods beyond the house and think probably they had done the killing. The woman had apparently been beaten to death with some heavy instrument and the only thing they found in the house a heavy iron shovel.
Suspicion at once fell on members of the family and they were at once arrested and brought to court, the grand jury being in session, they were closely questioned but there has not yet been any conclusion reached. The only motive given for the murder is that the guilty ones secured about $50 in money from a trunk that was near the dead woman's bed. A strap that bound it was found cut and the lid thrown open and the money gone. since this writing the above Calvin Rains has virtually confess to killing his wife with a stick.
