In 1885 John Francis Lawlor enlisted in the U.S. Calvary. He was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas, Troop A 7th Calvary and served under Captain Miles Moylan. Other tours of duty were at Fort Meade in the Dakota Territory, and at Fort Keogh, Montana where he played on the Fort Keogh Baseball team. In 1890 his tour of duty ended, he married Effie Ann Guthrie in Junction City, KS and they returned shortly after to New Haven, CT. On Mar. 2, 1897 he joined the New Haven Police Dept. as a supernumerary, and on Jan. 2, 1907 he became a fulltime patrolman.
