The inscription reads: "Sacred/to the memory of/Mary Jaqueline/beloved wife of/John C. Vowell/of Alexandria; and daughter/of Augustine J. Smith of/Shooter's Hill, Middlesex County,/Va., born Febry. 12, 1773, died/Oct. 31, 1846, ripe in years./and in the full assurance of/a blessed immortality/OUR MOTHER/Her record is on high/Job. 16 Chap 19 Ver./Calm on the bosom of thy God/Fair spirit rest thee now;/Ev'n while with us, thy footsteps tread,/His soul was on thy brow."

There are two grave markers for Mary Smith Vowell in this family plot -- an obelisk and one of these boxtombs. The inscription on her boxtomb reads: "Sacred/to the memory of/Mary Jaqueline Vowell/beloved wife of/John C. Vowell/and daughter of/Augustine Smith of Shooter's Hill/born in/Middlesex Co., Va./Feby. 12th 1773/died in Alexandria, D.C./Oct. 30th 1846/The sun shall be no more thy light by/day; neither for brightness shall the moon give light until thee; but the Lord/Shall be unto thee an everlasting light/and thy God thy glory./Isaiah Chap. 60 V. 19." (Inscription from "Tombstone Inscriptions of Alexandria, Virginia," Wesley E. Pippenger, volume 1 (1992).)
