BALDWIN, Marilyn Ann
Marilyn A. Baldwin died January 21, 2013 as a result of Alzheimer's disease at the age of 79 in Roseville, California. Marilyn was born Marilyn Ann Carlson on August 15, 1933 in Chico, California, the daughter of Leonard C. Carlson and Eleanor P. Skelly. A fourth generation Californian of Butte County ranchers, Marilyn's roots extended to her great grandparents' arrival in Nevada City during the Gold Rush.
Marilyn grew up in Durham, California and later graduated from Mills College in Oakland. She then married Stanley R. Baldwin in 1961 and moved to Land Park in Sacramento where she was a kindergarten and elementary school teacher. Over the years, she introduced a great many children to the joys learning, starting them on their road to success.
Marilyn lost her husband, Stanley, far too young in 1974, leaving her to raise her children Anne and Donald as a single mother. Despite these demands, her heart and her door were always open to all, and she became known as the Universal Mom and later the Universal Grandma.
In the mid 1990's, Marilyn developed a metabolic liver disorder, but her life was saved by a liver transplant made possible by the transplant program at UCSF and the generosity of a donor family who gave the gift of life. This made it possible for her to live a full life and to be part of her grandchildren's lives and so many others.
Marilyn is survived by her sister, Irene Marler, daughter, Anne DeMar and son-in-law, Andrew DeMar as well as her son Donald Baldwin, grandsons Jace and Blake DeMar and stepgrandson Spencer DeMar as well as her extended family and many, many friends. Plans for a celebration of her life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marilyn's memory to Sierra Donor Services, 1760 Creekside Oaks Drive, Suite 220, Sacramento, CA 95833.
