John Wesley Gale, Sr. was born ?/?/1765 in Kent Co, MD. He died ca. 1850 in Robb Twp, Posey Co, IN.. He is named after the famous minister John Wesley (1703 - 1791), founder of the Methodist denomination. He was the fourth known son and fifth child of Rasin Gale I (b. 5/22/1735 Kent Co, MD) and Martha Moore (b. ABT 1736 in St Pauls Parish, Chestertown, Kent Co, MD). John Wesley married on 1/29/1793 in Chester Parish, Kent Co, MD to Phoebe Everett (b. ABT 1775 Kent Co, MD, d. in Lynn Township, Posey Co, IN), her father was St. Leger Everett.

John's father willed to him all that tract of land he had in Fayette Co, PA. In 1799 John had 300 acres in Dunbar Township, Fayette Co, PA (one horse and 2 cows).

In about 1800 John moved his family to Harrison Co, KY.

On 9/1/1815 a band of 44 settlers, lead by the Joseph and Rebecca Endicott (with five sons) left their homes in the small community known as Colville on the border of the present Harrison and Bourbon Counties in Kentucky near Cynthiana, Harrison Co, KY and headed for Indiana. Before departing they divided into two groups. Part of the men traveled by land with horses, wagons, and cattle. The women and children with men enough to man the boats embarked at Augusta, Ky and traveled by water, landing at Diamond Island, now known as West Franklin, from which point the journey continued by land. On September 25, they arrived in Posey County, Indiana, settling about a mile from present day Poseyville in Robb Township. It was the largest recorded migration from the 'Blue Grass' country of Kentucky to the Cynthiana area of Indiana. Their new home was an almost unbroken wilderness. Game was abundant. Venison and wild turkey were common articles on the daily menu. Bears, panthers, and wolves added to the daily hazards of life, not to mention the prowling Indian. The flaming plumage of pheasant and parrotquet brightened the dark green of the forest; the sweeping eagle menaced the safety of the flocks.

Not included in this migration, but did migrate about the same time to the same places where John Wesley Gale, Sr. and family (his wife, Phoebe Everett, and eight children, Anne (18), Mary (17), Phoebe (16), Joseph (15), John Jr.(14), William (12), Martha (8)(this is the future wife of Abner Nelson Long, my third great grandfather, and James (about 1 year or less).

The 44 arrived on 9/25/1815 in Robb Township, Posey County, Indiana.

John Wesley Gale, Sr. was appointed an officer of Robb Township by the county board from 1817 to 1820.
