Pioneer of Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.

Hannah Braddock, daughter of Elizabeth (née Hancock) and Robert Braddock, was born April 1713 in Evesham Township, Burlington County, Province of New Jersey. Hannah's father had immigrated to America in 1702; her mother was born in Evesham.

Hannah Braddock and John Painter were married on 9 June 1735 in New Jersey. The marriage record identified Hannah, then 22, as a "spinster" in the sense of a single woman who had never married, and John as a "yeoman," the respectable owner of a small farm. Both were then residents of Evesham. The couple are known to have had seven children, all born in Burlington County—

• Sarah Painter Humbert
• John Painter
• Robert Painter
• Thomas Painter
• Jane Painter Branson
• Hannah Painter Hains Antrim Babb
• Isaac Painter

The Painter family moved permanently to Frederick County, Colony of Virginia, by the early 1760s.

Notes

Robert Braddock's 1714 will (Burlington Co.) named his wife Elizabeth, and children Robert, Rachel, and Hannah.

John Painter "was married to Hannah Bradock [sic] who was supposed to be related to General [Edward] Bradock. She was a very stout, thorough going woman, well able to endure hardship incident to frontier life. He put up a rude cabin in the wilderness, built a shop, worked at his trade, cleared land. In the mean time his wife proved to him a helpmate for she assisted him in all his toils, both in and out of doors. By honest labor and rigid economy he acquired property and supported a family of seven children named as follows; John, Robert, Thomas and Isaac, Jane, Sarah, and Hannah [...]" (Mary Antrim Roberts Autobiography (undated; late 1800s) in: Clyde V. Antrim, Antrim Family Newsletter, retrieved 6 May 2014 from: http://www.antrimfamilynewsletter.com/antrim4.htm) Mary (née Antrim) Roberts (1794-1885), was the youngest child of Hannah (née Painter) and Godfrey Antrim.
