June Thompson Barnes, 85, of Huntsville passed away peacefully Thursday, at home with family members by her side. June was born to Joe Billy and Maybell Patterson Thompson in Augusta, Georgia. June was raised by her father and Ruth Patterson Thompson, following the death of her mother. She graduated from Coffee High School in 1946 and Larimore Business College in Florence, Alabama. She was a majorette in the Coffee High band. She moved to Huntsville in 1957 with her husband, John, who worked at NASA. She was a member and volunteer receptionist at First United Methodist Church and a member of United Methodist Women. June was an avid gardener and was a member of the Green Valley Garden Club and Botanical Garden Society as well as a bookkeeper at Giles Home and Garden Nursery and Brinkley Landscaping. June was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, John Barnes, Sr., her brother Sonny Thompson of Florence, and her grandson Shane Barnes of Huntsville.
June is survived by her four children, John Barnes, Jr. (Jenny), David Barnes, Patti Barnes Gipson (John), and Mike Barnes (Jane) all of Huntsville as well as 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon Monday at First United Methodist Church on Randolph Street, followed with a memorial service at 12:00, and internment at Maple Hill Cemetery, Inc.
The family would like to express their love and thankfulness to caretakers Cathy Davis and Steffanie Erdelt.
