Nellie was the daughter of Benjamin and Sarah Smith Dennis of Pennsylvania with siblings: Mary A.(1849), Frances Malinda (1851), William Henry(1853), Benjamin Franklin (1858), and Marie (1860). She married John LaFarree on 2 December 1878 in Wood County, and they had children: Leon Edward (1879), Jessie P.N.(1881)(Hillard), Ruby Rae(1887), and Joy G.(1892). Nellie had an eighth grade education.
