Charles F. Johnson was born about 1843 in Chicago, Illinois or New Haven, Connecticut. During the American Civil War, he served in Company H of the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, enlisting on 21 April 1863 from Chicago and serving until the regiment mustered out on 20 August 1865.
After the war, he settled for a time in Connecticut, living in and around Bridgeport and New Haven. He was married at least twice: to Harriet Thompson from whom he was divorced around 1868, Phebe Ann Bryan to whom he married in April of 1892 in New Haven, Connecticut, and to Georgianna to whom he was married at the time of his death.
