Richard Swartzendruber, 80, passed away May 17, 2019, in Springvale, Maine.
Dick was born August 5, 1939, in Davenport, Iowa. He was a graduate of Davenport High School and spent the first 60 years of his life in Iowa. He married Carol Field October 19, 1962. They lived in Davenport where he was a contractor and built houses. They later moved to Fort Dodge, Iowa, where Dick was an owner and manager of Kallin Johnson Monument Company and also spent several years managing their Sioux City office.
In retirement, Dick and Carol moved to Springvale, Maine, to be close to their son John Swartzendruber in Dover, New Hampshire, his wife Kristin Thoresen Swartzendruber, and their children Jackson and Avery. Carol's sister Karen and husband Bob Campbell live in Hampton, New Hampshire.
Dick's wife Carol Swartzendruber passed away June 28, 2019.
Dick enjoyed woodworking, landscaping yard work, stamp collecting and watching his grandkids swim, dive, flip and ride unicycles. Despite his poor vision due to diabetes, he kept quite busy.
He enjoyed taking care of the landscape at Carll-Heald & Black funeral home in Springvale for many years and visiting church friends and neighbors, especially Gail who was a special help this past year.
A memorial service will be held for Dick and Carol on August 24th, 2019, at 10 am the North Parish Congregational Church UCC, 845 Main Street, Sanford, ME 04073.
Memorial gifts in Dick's memory may be made to the Free Supper at the North Parish Congregational Church.
Burial will be in Elmira, Illinois, cemetery at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.
