MIZE, JAMES R. J.R. "Sleepy" Mize born September 15, 1924 in Montgomery Alabama, passed away of a sudden heart attack March 23, 2001 while vacationing at his home on the Sea of Cortez in San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico. He was a long time resident of La Jolla. During his stint in the Navy he was a member of the Under Water Demolition Team (forerunners of the Navy Seals). In 1945 he joined the San Diego City Lifeguards, spending most of his guard time at Mission Beach and Windnsea Beach in La Jolla. Later he became a car dealer, at one time owning 5 car lots throughout San Diego. In 1963 he founded Petro Lease Limited specializing in Oil and Gas leasing throughout the Western U.S. and Alaska. In 1970 he founded Temptronix Inc., a medical device manufacturing business, located off Miramar Road, which is still operating today under the direction of his only son, Charlie. Besides his son he is survived by his wife of 40 years, Chris, and a sister, Jean Flowers of Lake Havasu. A celebration of his life was held at La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla on March 30, 2001, which was attended by over 300 people who loved and admired him. He will be missed by all.
