In 1860, he was a farmer living with his parents in Jackson Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Carlisle August 29, 1864, as a private with Co. I, 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry (92nd Pa). Captured during the March to the Sea, he was paroled from captivity April 4, 1865, and honorably discharged by special order June 14, 1865.

He married Martha Ellen Roth and fathered Mervin M. (b. 1872, d. 1887), George W. (b./d. 1878), Anna M. (b. 1880), Howard W. (b. 1882), Reuben C. (b. 11/25/84), Reynolds William - or vice-versa (b. 10/26/87), and Mary G. (b. 1892).
