Bridget 'Bea' (McHale) Hughes was born to Mr. & Mrs. Richard Wm. (Honorah Nealon)McHale of Kincon, Kilfian, Ballina, Mayo, Ireland. She was one of 14 children, all of whom lived to adulthood. She came to New York City where she met and married in, 1907 James Hughes, a widower with two small daughters whom she raised as her own: Margaret Ellen (Hughes Lawlor) Gilligan & Sarah 'Sadie' Kathleen (Hughes Lawlor). Her sister, Mrs. James P. (Margaret McHale) Lawlor's two sons would later marry Bridget's two step daughters. Bridget and James sponsored many of their siblings, cousins and others to come to America from Ireland, never forgetting their simple beginnings. She is buried with her husband James Hughes along with 'their' girls along and their husbands: Mr. & Mrs. Richard Francis [Sarah Kathleen 'Sadie' Hughes] Lawlor, [Dick & Sadie's] daughter - Margaret McHale Lawlor, Mr. and Mrs. James Joseph Lawlor [Margaret Ellen Hughes Lawlor Gilligan] in the Hughes Family Plot in Calvary Cemetery. It is believed that other family members are buried here as well, as the original grave was purchased for fifteen burials [5 across & 3 deep]. Headstone reads: HUGHES, 'Bridget' and 'James'.
