"Richardson was a farmer, and raised his family on his North Carolina farm until hard times were encountered in the late 1830's, with crop failure and overcrowding. Richardson, along with several other families of that area, decided to seek better living conditions to the West. With his bride Lucy, and their children, he started the migratory trek over the Cumberland. He stopped in Robertson County, then Maury County, Tennessee, where they remained until the early 1840's. While in Maury County, their oldest daughter married, and their oldest son also married. They later migrated to Southern Illinois. Their second oldest son married and settled in Calloway County, Kentucky, near Murray. Richardson once again packed up the family and started out for the 'new farming frontier' in Southern Illinois. They arrived around 1845. He and Lucy lived near Vienna until his death in 1865 and hers in 1879. The Mathews surname became Mathis with Richardson's children.
