Barbara Joy VanderWeyst Atkin, 83, passed away January 22, 2013, in St. George, Utah. She was born November 3, 1929, in Spokane, Washington, to Theodore VanderWeyst and Cuba Rae Berneck. Joy lived in the Spokane and North Idaho area through age 9, during which time her parents divorced and Cuba married Bert Hall from Washington, Utah. At that time Bert was working on road construction in the Spokane and North Idaho area. Joy became a sister to Bert's 5 daughters and 1 son. The family lived in North Idaho for three years and then moved to Washington, Utah.

Cuba had a love for music and instilled that love for music in her children and many others. Joy passed that musical upbringing on by teaching hundreds of students, her children and grandchildren how to play the piano. All through her life, Joy enjoyed accompanying singing groups on the piano and playing the piano and organ at church.

Joy attended and graduated from Dixie High School where she was Valedictorian of her high school class. Following high school Joy attended Dixie College where she met and married Rudger Clayton Atkin on March 10, 1948, in Washington, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple. Joy became Clayton's partner in raising their four sons as she supported him in being a cattle rancher and in other business ventures. She kept the books, paid the bills, and helped Clayton in all he did. Joy served tirelessly in many church and public service assignments throughout her life.

She is survived by her children: Jerry C. (Carolyn) Atkin, Doyle (Colleen) Atkin of St. George, and Troy (Stephanie) Atkin of McAlester, Oklahoma; daughter-in-law, Nanette Atkin of St. George; four sisters, Lorna (Austin) Iverson of Washington, Ione (Don) Miller of Santa Clara, Wanda (Ralph) McDonald of Pleasant Grove, and Clora (Barney) Verheyen of Las Vegas, Nevada; sister-in-law, Rita Hall of Orem, UT; 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, R. Clayton Atkin; son, Brent V. Atkin; sister, Ferol Chattin; and brother, Kelly Hall.

Funeral services will be held Monday, on January 28, at 11:00 a.m. in the St. George 5th and 6th Ward Chapel, 400 East 100 South, St. George, UT. Viewings will be on Sunday, January 27, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George and on Monday, January 28, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the chapel, prior to the service.

Interment will be in the St. George City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Dixie College/Clayton and Joy Atkin Scholarship fund, 225 South 700 East, St. George, UT 84770
