He was a graduate of Bartlett Yancey High School and went on to attend Alamance Community College where he received certificates in several disciplines. He was employed by the State of N.C. for over thirty years and subsequently retired from the Department of Corrections as a Probation Officer. His respected service lead to him being presented The Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award by the Governor North Carolina. An avid sportsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and motorcycling. He enjoyed social gatherings and never met a stranger. He was of the Baptist faith.
