Marion Loren Black, 81 year old resident of New Martinsville, died at his home Monday morning.He was born Apr 22, 1868 at Shippenville,Clarion Co., Pa., a son of the late William Farmer Black and Lucinda Humes McKissick Black.
He was one of eight brothers. George M. Black, John Henry Black, Samuel Porter Black, David Harrison Black, Frank Lemuel Black, Marion Loren Black, Edward Richard Black, and William Albert Black. These brothers worked the oil and gas fields in PA, WV, and TX during the late 19th and early 20th century.
During the time of this oil boom he came to New Martinsville, WV from Pennsylvania. He was an oil well drilling contractor. Later, Mr. Black became superintendent of Greenlawn Memorial Park in New Martinsville. He was a member of the First Methodist Church and a member of the Wetzel Lodge No. 39, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, which performed ritualistic services at the burial in Greenlawn.
Survivors include his widow, Laura Bast Black, whom he married September 14, 1889, a son, George "Everett" Black, New Martinsville druggist, and a granddaughter, Martha Black, Sevilla, Spain. Deceased are two sons, William Edward Black, and Perry Scott Black.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday in Wharton-Ellis funeral home, with Dr. M. C. Miles, pastor of the Warwood Methodist Church in charge, assisted by the Reverend Paul Chamberlain. The burial followed at Greenlawn Memorial Park, New Martinsville, WV.
