FROM GAMMON FAMILY BOOK PAGE 167

"Moved with parents to Knox County, Tennessee around 1794. He and Lavinia moved from Knox County to Putnam County, Indiana in about 1828 where, it is said, some of the Turbevilles had already moved. About 1847 Dozier visited Decatur County, Iowa...nice prairie land, no trees to remove, good land at $1.25 per acre (later worth near $200 per acre), also on account of better schools, and the old trouble, slavery, etc. They decided to sell in Indiana and moved to Iowa, where they reared their families, etc."

THE HISTORY OF DECATUR COUNTY IOWA 1839-1970 BY HIMENA V. HOFFMAN
Though there was no hospital in the county, there was a place for the care of the feeble-minded, and nonviolent insane. This institution came into existence in 1866 when the county Board of Supervisors purchased one hundred and sixty acres and the residence of DOZIER GAMMON as a place where paupers could be cared for and, as far as possible, employed. In 1878 an addition was added to provide for the care of the insane.
