Mrs. Barr was born in Rockingham County on October 26, 1923 a daughter of the late Willie and Maggie Ellen (Good) Stroop.
Mrs. Barr was an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Burketown where she was a member of the church choir and various Women of the Church groups. Prior to retiring Mrs. Barr worked as a seamstress for Shenandoah Tailors and also worked in the school cafeteria for area Augusta County Schools. During WWII, she was employed at DuPont while her husband was defending our country.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Barr was preceded in death by six brothers, Carson, Emmett, Floyd, Gilbert, Garnett and Roy Stroop and a sister, Mrs. Dolly Kaump.
Surviving in addition to her husband to whom she married on February 26, 1944 is a son and daughter-in-law; Johnnie M. Barr, Jr. and his wife Teresa H. of Barren Ridge; a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa Gail "Terri" Shifflett and her husband Barry M. of New Hope; a sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy S. Roller and her husband O. Beverly of Weyers Cave; four grandchildren, Sarah Lindsey Barr, Amanda Kathleen Barr, Lisa (Shifflett) Cox and her husband Eric and Brian M. Shifflett and his fiancée Kelly Bottenfield, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Active pallbearers will be Tom Thacker, Mark Dunsmore, Eddie Lynn, Sidney Moyer, Jim Shreckrise and Louis Marshall.
The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, April 19, 2010 in the Coffman Funeral Home & Crematory or at other times the residence.
A Memorial service will be conducted 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 20, 2010 in Bethany United Methodist Church by the Rev. Brad McMullen.
Burial will be private in the Naked Creek Cemetery in Burketown.
