Perry volunteered for army service during the Civil War by enlisting in the 103rd Regiment, August 12, 1862, at Cleveland, Ohio for a term of 3 years. Mustered into Company E, he was mustered out with his company, June 12 1865 in Raleigh, North Carolina at the end of the war. His name is on Panel #14 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio. See wwwwsoldiersandsailors.com for more Monument info.

He moved to Newark Township, Webster County Iowa, to farm after the war. He and his wife, Diana,(nee Luse), raised three children--Florence, Edwin, and Erwin.
