Christine Bernadette Nichols, 61, of Des Moines, formerly of Ottumwa, died Jan. 16, 2013 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.

The daughter of Ed and Velma (Nettles) Ball, Bernadette was born Nov. 11, 1951. She had worked at The Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa. She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Ottumwa.

Surviving are her children, Munirih Nichols of Cedar Falls, Julian Nichols Robin of Ottumwa, Robert Nichols(fiancée Bryndee Boheman) of Waverly and Andrea Carr of Ft. Hood, Texas; three grandchildren, Shamirih, Malyk and Sasha; her father, Ed Ball of Ottumwa; two brothers, Calvin Nettles and Ed Ball Jr., both of Des Moines; and five sisters, Sandra Taylor of Ottumwa, Virginia Ball of Des Moines, Deloris Ball-Podraza of Lincoln, Neb., Carol Ball of Memphis, Tenn. and Madge Ball of Scottsdale, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Funeral services will be 11 am Thursday at the Second Baptist Church with Rev. Leslie Buchanan Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 11 am today at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 5-7 pm this evening. Memorial has been established to the family.
