Godfrey Armitage was born in England, probably in Westbury Leigh, Wiltshire, and came to America from Bristol in 1635. He sailed with Rev. Richard Mather on the “James”, John Taylor, master. They left England on May 23 and arrived at Boston on August 17. The “James” survived the hurricane that destroyed the “Angel Gabriel”.

Godfrey settled first in Lynn, Massachusetts. Where he took the freeman’s oath on March 14, 1639. He later removed to Boston and married there, about 1640, Sarah Webb. Godfrey and Sarah had a daughter named Rebekah in 1641. They also had three sons who apparently died young, Samuel, John & Samuel. Sarah may have died around February 1650 with the birth of the second Samuel. Godfrey then married Mary Cogswell. This couple had one son. named Samuel, born in April of 1651. In 1675, Godfrey wrote his will and left a legacy to his “loving daughter Rebekah Tarbox”, and the rest of his estate to his son Samuel.
