Long time Estes Park resident and businessman, Peter Marsh died at the Estes Park Medical Center early Wednesday morning January 16, 2013. He was 69 years old. Peter Warren Marsh was born October 1, 1943 in Washington, DC. to Frederick C. and Ann (Grove) Marsh. Peter graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in Business Administration and Advertising. He started his career in marketing at Macy's, Kansas City. When he moved to Dayton's, Minneapolis, he had the luck to be on the original concept team for the Target Stores and B. Dalton Booksellers. He moved to Estes Park in 1971 and became a partner in Rocky Mountain Ski Tours, which held the Rocky Mountain National Park concession for both the cross country ski school and the downhill ski school at Hidden Valley.
On May 13, 1978 he married Maureen (Marshall) Henderson in Estes Park. In 1982 the couple purchased the Presbyterian Church of the Rockies on Elkhorn Avenue and developed The Old Church Shops, which opened Memorial Day weekend in 1982, just before the Lawn Lake Flood.
Peter was a charter member of Forward Estes Park Foundation, which helped bring about the Estes Park Urban Renewal Authority and continued his marketing career by forming the original advertising committee when he was President of the Chamber of Commerce. When the committee was absorbed into Town Government, he became Advertising Manager for the Town, and won a number of national awards for the programs he developed. He was particularly proud of the original town web-site being named one of the top web sites in the world at the time. As the marketing program evolved, he became Advertising Manager of Visit Estes Park.
Peter was a family man and enjoyed spending time with his wife, daughters and grandchildren. He taught his daughters to ski, drive and balance their checkbooks. He was a certified ski instructor and enjoyed scuba diving and parachuting. Peter is survived by his wife Maureen of Estes Park, daughters Kathleen Henderson and her husband Willson Flor of Milwaukee, WI, Shannon McGlothlen and her husband Robert Keep of Estes Park and Margaret Erin Trenka and her husband Mark of Denver, grandchildren Gwendolyn, Meghan, C. Patrick, Lauren & Sarah. He is also survived by a brother, Frederick C. Marsh, Jr. of Longmont, and a sister, Annelee Marsh Walker of Lawrence, KS. An informal gathering will be held on Saturday February 2, 2013 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at the Other Side Restaurant. Peter's last request was not for a solemn occasion, but for a time when all his friends and family could raise a glass, tell stories and share their memories of him.
