John was born abt 1826 in Ohio to Andrew and Sophronia (Dill) Byers. He married Phoebe Ann Anderson unk in Allen Co., IN. Not much is known about her. John next married Eliza Jane Hatfield (d/o Jesse Hatfield & Mariah Johnson) on 24 JAN 1850 in Allen Co., IN.

On 3/2/1865 he enlisted as a Private and was mustered into "G" Company, 152nd Indiana Infantry. He was mustered out on 8/30/1865 at Clarksburg, West Virginia.

John & Eliza Jane had the following known children: James F., William Andrew, Franklin Kiby, Jonathan Emmet, Mary Byers-Madden and Maggie.

Eliza Jane died in Toledo, Lucas Co., OH on 24 APR 1912 and it is unknown at present where she is buried.

A Number Received Yesterday From the United States Government. This morning Captain Allan H. Dougall received the following headstones from the United States government to mark the graves of the following soldiers:

Jonathan Byers, Co. G, 152nd Ind. Vol. Inf., Bowers' Chapel.
